“Good advertising doesn’t just sell products. It creates memories.”
One of my favorite marketing case studies is GEICO’s journey from a relatively unknown insurance company to one of the biggest brands in America.
The company didn’t become successful because it had the lowest prices alone. It became successful because it mastered the art of consistent, memorable advertising.
The Challenge
In the 1990s, GEICO faced a difficult problem.
People struggled even to pronounce its name.
The insurance industry was crowded with brands making almost identical promises.
Instead of competing only on price, GEICO decided to own one simple message:
That message stayed unchanged for years.
The Power of Consistency
Rather than creating a new identity every campaign, GEICO built around the same core proposition using different creative executions:
- The famous Gecko
- Cavemen campaign
- Maxwell the Pig
- Caleb the Camel
- Unskippable YouTube ads
Every campaign looked different.
Every campaign felt entertaining.
But every advertisement reinforced the exact same promise.
That’s branding.
What Businesses Can Learn
Many businesses make this mistake:
They keep changing slogans, creatives, messaging, and campaigns every few months.
Customers never get enough exposure to remember them.
GEICO proved that:
Consistency builds memory.
Memory builds trust.
Trust builds business.
My Take
As someone working in the advertising industry, I believe too many brands focus only on visibility.
Visibility alone isn’t enough.
People see thousands of advertisements every day.
The brands that win are those that become impossible to forget.
Whether it’s:
- a billboard,
- a digital campaign,
- transit media,
- or social media,
every touchpoint should reinforce one clear brand promise.
Outdoor advertising is particularly powerful because repeated exposure creates familiarity. A strategically placed billboard seen every day can strengthen recall far more effectively than a one-time promotional campaign.
The Lesson for Indian Brands
Indian businesses often treat advertising as an expense.
The world’s biggest brands treat it as a long-term investment.
GEICO invested consistently, stayed committed to one powerful message, and transformed itself from a niche insurer into an industry leader.
That’s the real lesson:
Great advertising doesn’t interrupt people. It stays with them.
